From engineering to football – an incredible journey
For our football facilitator, Mahadev Baratake, the path to his career of choice had been strewn with a number of obstacles. Born into a family with humble means in Dharwad, Baratake’s parents did their best to give a good education to their son. However, the pressure to make ends meet forced Baratake to study engineering after school, even though he was a passionate player of cricket, volleyball and Kho Kho in school.
Baratake did well in his career, though it was not his ‘chosen’ one. During his diploma, he got good grades and even bagged the ‘best student of the year’ award in college. Throughout this, he never gave up on his passion for sports. In fact, he started playing football while in college and was so good at it that he was invited to play in the league matches in the region.
After college, Baratake ended up taking a technical job. Three years into the job, he felt frustrated with his career. “I wanted to do something different. I wanted to get out of the corporate world as I was not happy with my job profile and the future it held,” says Baratake.
And thanks to Enabling Leadership’s partner in Dharwad, 24-year-old Baratake got the very opportunity that saved him from the drudgery of a job he did not enjoy. He was delighted to apply for the position of Football Facilitator for one of our programs, which offered him a chance to pursue his passion for the game, while also giving him an opportunity to enhance his inherent leadership skills.
“This feels like my dream job. After completing the teachers’ training program, I could see how my job has all the elements I want – leadership skills, social cause and football! Now it’s not just about being a football coach who teaches football. It’s more than that. It’s about being a facilitator who can bring a lot of change in children’s lives through the medium of football. I feel connected with Enabling Leadership’s core values,” says a proud Baratake.
Baratake has very naturally adapted to his new role and it is visible in the way he is bonding with the children in his teams. We are also very proud to have him and hope that he continues to pursue his passion confidently in the future as well!
